Watkins Maintains the Edge - But Calvert-Lewin May Yet Make the World Cup

Only one goal in his first ten English top division outings this campaign had plenty of doubting whether Dominic Calvert-Lewin's peak were behind him.

But, a only four weeks on, he stands as the most discussed forward in England following bagging seven goals in 6 consecutive games.

His most recent goal, in a 1-1 draw versus Sunderland, brought his total to eight, making him the leading English scorer in the Premier League this term.

A Stunning Return to Form

The 28-year-old moved to Leeds United on a free transfer in the summer, after a nine-year stint with Everton that was hampered by setbacks in its latter stages.

But, the data supporting his revival in Daniel Farke's new counter-attacking 3-5-2 setup are genuinely impressive.

His six-match scoring run places him in prestigious company as just the 11th English player to score in six or more consecutive Premier League fixtures.

To frame that statistic, even England captain Harry Kane did not achieve a run lasting this many games - his top stands at two distinct five-match runs.

And the sole English striker to better Calvert-Lewin in recent memory is Jamie Vardy, who embarked on an eight-game scoring streak for Leicester City in 2019.

The Reason for the Scoring Form?

What has made Calvert-Lewin so hard to stop in this period? A recent opponent's manager described it succinctly.

The former Sheffield United player has eleven England appearances, netting four goals, but has not represented the country since the last European Championship.

Observers believe the striker will be in contention for the World Cup squad if he can sustain this form.

"He looks as in shape as he has in a considerable period," one commented. "If he maintains this level of form... then he's going to be in a conversation for a World Cup place."
