Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the ability to question certain decisions from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
