Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'Dawn' for The Big Apple in First Speech
On his inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.
A Historic Mayor
The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.
Ignoring counsel to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”
Steering by Democratic Socialist Convictions
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for worry of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.
The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.
An Ambitious Policy Agenda
Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:
- Universal childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for about 1 million households
- A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
